Most of the snow in my yard has now melted, but several drift areas and shoveling piles still remain. Shouldn't this remaining snow somehow be measured. Does 4 or 5" in a drift give an accurate measure of snow remaining when the rest of the ground is bare. As I survey my neighborhood, there are a lot of these piles around with the potential for a lot of melt water. Thanks to CoCoRahs and Mother Nature for keeping my winter busy!

Those are good questions!  The artificial piles from shoveling, plowing, etc are never measured to determine snow depth. The procedures for measuring total snow on the ground is that if less than 50 percent of the ground is covered with snow, you should report a Trace for your snow depth. If there are substantial patches of snow even though the total coverage is less than 50 percent, you should note the extent and range of depths in your comments.

Glad we could keep you busy this winter  Smiley.
