New and Old ground snow

Good Morning,
I have old frozen snow drifts from previous snowfalls plus the new snow we just received. My question is: I am unable to measure or collect a core sample of the old frozen snow. The new snow is fluffy and I am able to obtain core sample and measure.
That said, how can I accurately do ground snow measurement and core sample reporting. I feel I am unable to report in this area until the old snow melts. Is this correct?

Hi Patricia...sorry for the late response.
Core samples are optional yet very much appreciated. There will be times when it is just not possible to take one. Sounds like this may (have been) be one of those times for you. We certainly appreciate all your hard work. Winter, especially this winter, can make for challenging observing!
